With the push clear, the continuity balances that make change possible without breaking what already runs: standardize the tissue, adapt the legacy and evolve the known. There are three, and they get decided all the time.
The first is to standardize the connective tissue without standardizing the ends. An everyday analogy helps. The plug and the socket are standardized so that any appliance can connect to the electrical grid. But each appliance does its own thing, and does something different: no one would ask the fridge and the drill to be the same appliance because they share the plug. With applications it is the same. What is worth standardizing is what connects: the interfaces, user identity, data contracts, observability of what is happening in each system. What is worth preserving is each domain's depth at the ends. The drilling application can go on being deeply a drilling application as long as it speaks the common language where it connects with the rest.
The second balance is to protect the prior investment by adapting, not discarding. A legacy system that holds a process up today does not have to die for the ecosystem to move forward. Often the best play is not to replace it but to adapt it: give it a modern interface on the outside, integrate it into the common data flow, let it keep doing its job while it stops being a dead end. The old system goes from being an isolated problem to being one more piece of the whole, without the operation losing a single day. You discard what has to be discarded, when discarding it costs less than keeping it, and not before.
The third balance is to minimize retraining by evolving the flows people already know. A shift routine is accumulated knowledge, not a habit to be corrected. When the change respects the shape of work people already know how to do, and modifies what is underneath without turning over what is seen on top, adoption stops being a battle. The new tool feels like the usual one, a bit better. That is the difference between a change that survives the third shift and one that gets abandoned within a week.
Push and balances are not ends in themselves. They are means. The next piece says what for: visibility, traceability and trustworthy AI.
